Pole to Pole
In 2019, I joined Greenpeace aboard the Esperanza as a filmmaker for the Atlantic leg of their Pole to Pole expedition, a campaign for a Global Ocean Treaty to protect at least a third of the world’s oceans by 2030. Sailing from the Azores to Jamaica, I documented the scientists and activists at the heart of the voyage, searching for hydrothermal vents in the Lost City, an ecosystem on the mid-Atlantic ridge thought to hold clues to the origins of life and now under threat from deep sea mining. Alongside a social film of the scientific work, I captured the quiet in-between moments of life at sea: salt-soft mornings, vast blue distances, and the small human rituals that anchor us far from land. Together, they reveal the vastness of the ocean and the tenderness of those who choose to protect it.
